About this award
This is a $500,000.00 grant awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center to Honeybee Robotics, Ltd., a subsidiary of Ensign-Bickford Industries, Inc. The grant is for a research project to increase the fidelity of lunar surface testing for sample collection. Honeybee Robotics will work with Masten Space Systems to mimic the expected plume effects from landing on the Moon, using existing PlanetVac hardware and developing test methodologies to capture more realistic landing conditions. This grant is not a set-aside contract. Through previous prime federal contract and grant awards, Honeybee Robotics has provided various space exploration technologies to NASA, such as drilling systems, robotic interfaces, and sample handling mechanisms, as well as advanced research and development for missions like the Mars Sample Return and Artemis lunar exploration program.
Description
This is honeybee robotic s grant proposal to increase the fidelity of lunar testing for sample collection by working with masten space systems to mimic the plume effects expected to be seen whilst landing on the moon. Honeybee proposes to:>use existing planetvac hardware, enabling direct comparison to prior testing>set up flight in similar manner as last test, but without the plume deflector>develop test methodology for regolith sample BIN to capture more realistic landing conditions with plume interactions.
