About this award
This $549,454 federal grant award to Florida State University (FSU) supports the development of an adaptive method for combining lumped and high-fidelity simulations of cryogenic fluid dynamics. The grant, awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), will fund research to achieve accurate predictions of conjugate heat transfer and phase-change dynamics in the transport and storage of cryogenic fluids. The project aims to seamlessly integrate nodal analysis and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling to efficiently design, verify, and test cryogenic fluid systems. This work will be carefully verified against experimental data. FSU, through its Sponsored Research Administration division, is a major public research university with extensive expertise in areas such as physical sciences and engineering. The university has a diverse portfolio of federal contracts and grants supporting both basic and applied research programs across numerous agencies, including NASA, the Department of Defense, and the National Science Foundation. This award does not utilize a set-aside designation.
Description
We propose an adaptive method for combining the lumped model and multi-material high-fidelity simulation of the cryogenic fluids. Through a seamless combination of the nodal analysis and CFD, accurate predictions of conjugate heat transfer in all materials (gas, liquid, and solids) and phase-change dynamics can be achieved. The adaptive mesh refinement method and dynamic multi-zonal switching between CFD and lump-model are proposed as a unique model for design, verification, and test of the transport and storage of cryogenic fluids efficiently. The model will be carefully verified with experimental data for different cryogenic flows.
