About this award

This federal contract award to the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) is focused on improving forecast tools for predicting solar particle events (SPEs) to support spacecraft launch operations. The goal is to provide more accurate forecasts of SPEs, which are critical for performing risk assessments that inform launch decisions. This research contract, valued at $400,643.00, is funded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and does not have a set-aside designation. UAH, a public research university, will leverage its expertise in areas such as astrophysics, solar-terrestrial physics, and atmospheric sciences to advance this mission-critical capability for NASA's space programs. The university has a history of delivering research and engineering services to federal agencies, including the Department of Defense and NASA, through various contract vehicles.

Description

The goal of the proposed research is to improve the forecast tools that are used to support spacecraft launch operations. Launch providers need accurate forecasts of solar particle events (spes) to the perform risk assessments that will inform their decisions on whether to proceed with planned launch operations. These risk assessments take into account the launch trajectory, the vulnerability of the avionics and the space radiation environment for up to seven hours following launch. The cost of scrubbing a launch is estimated by NASA to be ~1.2M$, lower before the fuel is loaded. This is an incentive to make careful risk assessments beginning with the forecast before any outburst occurs on the sun and continuing right up to launch.
