About this award
This is a $450,222.72 grant award from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to the University of Maryland, College Park. The grant is to support research that is relevant to NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission, with the goal of improving understanding of possible climates on rocky exoplanets. The research will serve as a foundation for future observations of these planets using NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The award is not set aside and is part of NASA's Exploring the Planet's Dimensions (XRP) research focus area. The University of Maryland, College Park is the prime recipient, and this award is a child contract under the parent organization, the University System of Maryland. The research is expected to be completed by June 15, 2023.
Description
The proposed work is relevant to the XRP call, as IT directly addresses open questions about atmospheric chemistry, surface physics, radiation, energy content and dynamics for rocky exoplanets in a self-consistent way. IT will allow US to maximize the scientific returns of NASA's tess mission by improving our understanding of possible climates on rocky planets and serving as a fundamental basis for future follow-up observations of those planets with NASA's jwst.
