About this award
This is a grant award from a civilian federal agency to the Regents of the University of Colorado (CU) for research related to the interpretation of the primary geologic processes and history that formed the Martian geologic record, with a focus on the role of water. The award, valued at $553,420.67, will run until September 30, 2024. The research is directly relevant to the objectives of the Mars Returned Sample Science Participating Scientist Program and will leverage the geochemical and mineralogical analytical capabilities of the Mars 2020 mission. CU has extensive expertise in water/rock interactions, which supports the exploration of the potential for life on Earth and other planets. This grant award is part of CU's broader portfolio of federal contract and grant awards across various scientific and technological domains, including space sciences, climate research, and quantum technologies. The award does not have a set-aside designation.
Description
A key returned sample science objective, as described by the recent international MSR objectives and samples team (imost) report is OBJ. 1, interpret the primary geologic processes and history that formed the martian geologic record, with an emphasis on the role of water . My research focuses on how water/rock reaction might support life on earth and other planets. As a CO-investigator of the rock powered life NAI, i characterize the multiple episodes of water/rock reactions recorded in seafloor and ophiolitic serpentinites expertise that is directly relevant to the objectives of the mars returned sample science participating scientist program and informs my perspective on identifying, articulating, and prioritizing scientific questions relevant to mars sample return, an exercise i have engaged in as a member of imost.
