About this award
This federal contract award, identified as 80NSSC19K0995, was granted by the Shared Services Center, a civilian agency, to The Regents of the University of Colorado, doing business as the University of Colorado, for a four-year suborbital-class research program. The award, valued at $4,389,847.00, will fund the development, launch, and operation of the "Astrophysics Research Testbed and UV Emission Mapping Imaging Spectrograph" (ARTEMIS), a 6U CubeSat. ARTEMIS will address two key questions in astronomy: how galaxies provide ionizing radiation to the intergalactic medium (IGM), and the transition from a neutral to an ionized IGM. This award was not designated as a set-aside contract. The University of Colorado has a history of providing research, education, and technology development services to federal agencies, including NASA, the Department of Defense, and NOAA, through past prime federal contract and grant awards.
Description
We propose a four year suborbital-class research program to develop, launch, and operate the astrophysics research testbed and UV emission mapping imaging spectrograph (artemis): a 6U cubesat that will address two key questions in astronomy: .how do galaxies provide ionizing radiation to the IGM? The transition from a neutral to an ionized intergalactic medium (IGM) was one of the key milestones in cosmic structure formation. Finding the ionizing sources - galaxies and AGN - is a central goal of the james webb space telescope (jwst), but even this flagship cannot solve one critical aspect of the problem: how much of this radiation actually escapes galaxies to RE-ionize the IGM? Webb cannot detect the ionizing radiation itself through the opaque high-z IGM, so users will instead use redshifted UV/optical emission lines as proxies. These proxies must be calibrated with direct measurements of ionizing radiation escape in a sample of galaxies at lower redshift. Artemis will directly measure the ionizing spectrum in 100 0.15
