This contract award is a grant for research from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Shared Services Center to The Johns Hopkins University. Under the grant, the Johns Hopkins University will calibrate existing passive spectrometer data collected by the ChemCam instrument on the Mars Science Laboratory rover from mission Sol 1869 to both radiance and relative reflectance. The university will develop and archive calibration software and documentation, including a user's guide, on the NASA GitHub site. For each spectrum, supporting metadata will also be provided. By archiving the calibrated spectrometer data along with the calibration software algorithms, the work will directly address the planetary science community's need for high-spatial-and-spectral-resolution visible-near-infrared data of Mars surface materials. The potential value of the grant is $130,320.84 and work is expected to be completed by March 31, 2023. No set-aside designation was used for this award.
