About this award
This federal contract award to the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) is a $354,454 grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for research related to the InSight mission to Mars. The research will use tidal observations to probe Mars's internal structure, complementing and expanding on the existing InSight mission objectives. The award is not associated with a larger contract vehicle and does not have a set-aside designation. UCSC is the prime contractor, and the parent organization is the State of California Controller's Office, which has also received federal grants and subcontracted on other federal contracts. The research is expected to be completed by August 30, 2022 and will contribute to comparative planetology studies between Mars, Earth, and the Moon.
Description
This proposal is relevant to science objectives AA, AC and ad of the insight mission, and is an interdisciplinary investigation (special investigation #8). Tides are sensitive to characteristics (like mantle temperature and grain size) which are only weakly constrained by other methods. This approach is thus complementary to, and expands on, existing insight objectives. I propose to combined the tidal observations with other constraints using a markov chain monte carlo approach to probe mars's internal structure in an interdisciplinary fashion. The results will also be used in a comparative planetology approach, comparing the mars results with the better-characterized tidal response of the solid earth and the moon.
