About this award

The Ohio State University was awarded a $199,999 grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to conduct research on extracting granulation parameters and asteroseismic parameters from data collected by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). The goal is to analyze data on a large sample of evolved stars within the TESS fields, which could yield up to 2.3 million targets with measurable asteroseismic parameters. This research is intended to enable unprecedented galactic archeology studies. The grant does not have a set-aside designation and was awarded on January 1, 2019, with a completion date of December 31, 2021.

Description

We propose an ambitious campaign for extracting granulation parameters and asteroseismic parameters for large samples of evolved STARS in the tess fields. Even with the minimum 27 day baseline we estimate that up to 2.3 million targets could have at least some measurable asteroseismic parameters, covering a substantial fraction of the galaxy and permitting unprecedented galactic archeology studies. We justify our predicted yields and present a comprehensive analysis and follow-up plan to take advantage of the unique capabilities of tess as a stellar population discovery engine.
