About this award

This federal contract award, valued at $1,032,164.00, was granted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The contract is for the continued development and improvement of the EVA (Evaluation and Visualization Application) tool, which is used to access and visualize key parameters from the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission's Science Operations Center (SOC). The work will be performed by Dr. Oka, with the assistance of a graduate student, and will involve adjusting and improving the EVA tool to accommodate changes in the data format, instruments, or software, as well as developing and enhancing features for visualizing and selecting burst data. The contract also includes hosting and improving webpages related to MMS burst memory management and SITL (Science In-The-Loop) reports. This contract does not have a set-aside designation.

Description

DR. OKA, with the help of a graduate student, will be responsible for the continued development and improvement of the EVA tool that will access and permit interactive visualization of the key sitl parameters provided by the MMS SOC. In carrying out the work described in this SOW, DR. OKA will interface with the MMS project scientist, the MMS instrument teams, and the MMS science data center (SDC). Specifically, the following elements of work shall be performed: 1. Adjust and improve EVA whenever changes are made to the sitl data format, relevant MMS instruments, or relevant software at SDC. The student will work on some of the changes that are routinely made (e.g., the alterations of the default parameter set for every orbit season). 2. Develop and improve relevant components of EVA that allows visualization and selection of burst data in future phases. For example, if an improved version of the automated burst selection system (different algorithms are currently under development) becomes ready for deployment, IT needs to be implemented in EVA and EVA will provide an interface for users to easily compare between different algorithms or between automated or manual selections. 3. Continue hosting, developing, and improving the webpage MMS burst memory management which displays the near-real-time status of onboard memory usage. The student will monitor the displayed materials and suggest to MO if any change/fix should be made. 4. Continue hosting, developing and improving the webpage MMS sitl reports which allows sharing all data files generated by the sitl (i.e. (1) plots of sitl data, (2) daily report in an ascii format, (3) the entire burst selection in the IDL .SAV format, and (4) additional information such as the number of buffers and a brief comment on the entire ROI). 5. Thoroughly test all new or modified EVA features to ensure that EVA works across the MAC, linux, and PC computer platforms. The student will perform most of the testing, and notify MO of problems that need to be fixed. 6. Provide user support for sitls using the EVA software. 7. MO and the student will attend all MMS science team meetings, where future improvements to EVA are discussed. 8. MO and the student will attend sitl telecons on mondays, where issues and improvements to EVA are often discussed. 9. Act as a supervisory sitl and modify the back-structure as needed.
