About this award
This is a $84,000.00 grant awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to LC Tech, a minority-owned, for-profit, and woman-owned business located in Palo Alto, California. The purpose of the grant is to research sustainable oxygen (O2) generation and carbon dioxide (CO2) removal for environmental control and life support systems (ECLSS), which are crucial for long-duration manned space exploration. The grant leverages the abundant high-energy light available in space as an energy source for titanium dioxide (TiO2)-photocatalyzed conversion of CO2 to generate O2, which can be done without consuming any thermal or electrical energy, significantly reducing the mass, volume, and power consumption of the reactor. This grant does not have a set-aside designation.
Description
Sustainable oxygen (O2) generation and carbon dioxide (CO2) removal are both vital for environmental control and life support systems (eclss), and crucial for long duration manned space exploration. The abundant high-energy light in space (with wavelengths as low as 190 NM, compared to 300 NM on earth) is an ideal energy source for titanium dioxide (TIO2)- photocatalyzed conversion of CO2 to generate O2. This high energy source available in space allows the O2 production to proceed without consuming any thermal or electrical energy, a drastic reduction in reactor mass, volume and power consumption.
