About this award

This is a grant awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center to American University, a private university located in Washington, D.C. The $396,306.51 grant is for the development of far infrared-spectrometers using novel microwave kinetic inductance detectors (MKIDs) and advanced fabrication techniques for cryogenic detector readout applications. The work will be conducted in three main areas: 1) developing novel MKID materials, 2) building a moderate spectral resolution (R~500) MKID-based spectrometer for a balloon-borne observatory, and 3) exploring novel micro-machined silicon wafer fabrication methods for cryogenic detector readout. This grant does not have a set-aside designation and will be performed at American University's facilities in Washington, D.C. The award date was June 30, 2018 and the planned completion date is December 31, 2021.

Description

We propose an american university effort to participate and cooperate with the NASA/ goddard space flight center to develop a series of far infrared-spectrometers using novel microwave kinetic inductance detectors (mkids) as well as novel architectures for facilitating the readout of cryogenic detectors. These efforts will be primarily be in three major areas: 1.) development of novel materials for photon-counting mkid applications; 2.) development of a moderate spectral resolution (r ~500) spectrometer, which will employ mkids for a balloon-borne observatory; and 3.) development of novel fabrication techniques on micro-machined silicon wafers for cryogenic detector readout applications.
