About this award

This is a grant award from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) to continue fieldwork and data analysis for maintaining and improving Aqua Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) ocean color remote sensing algorithms. The work, titled "Plumes and Blooms: A Multi-Decadal Coastal Bio-Optical Time-Series and Retrospective Data Analysis", was initially funded under NASA's Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences (ROSES) 2013 program. This current $878,363.63 grant award is to include those applicable portions of the prior work into NASA's 2017 Earth Science Division Senior Review. The grant does not have a set-aside designation and was awarded directly to UCSB, a public research university in California, on March 27, 2018. The work is to be performed in Santa Barbara, California, and will continue through July 27, 2022.

Description

We propose to continue the fieldwork and data analysis tasks needed to maintain the aqua MO DIS ocean remote sensing reflectance, phytoplankton pigment and inherent optical property (IOP) algorithms using observations from the santa barbara channel (SBC). This work, "plumes and blooms: a multi-decadal coastal BIO-optical time-series and retrospective data analysis" (D.A. Siegel, ucsb, PI), was funded under the roses 2013 a.46 terra and aqua -algorithms - existing data products. The present request is to include those portions of that work appropriate for MO DIS aqua ocean color algorithm maintenance in the 2017 NASA earth science division (ESD) senior review (SR).
