About this award
This federal contract award was made by the Shared Services Center, a civilian agency, to George Mason University, a public research university in Fairfax, Virginia. The contract, valued at $95,000.00, is for the development of software tools to expand the number of datasets available through the Heliophysics Application Programmers Interface (HAPI). The original project, previously supported by a NASA proposal, involved developing a standard API and software package for time series-like data, making data from multiple sources accessible through the HAPI, and creating client-side software for data analysis. This new award will further develop the HAPI ecosystem, including creating a validation server, API clients, and a reference implementation for an HAPI server. The contract does not have a set-aside designation.
Description
Tsds, or time series data server, is a software project that was previously supported by NASA proposal number 10-HDEE10-0015 and involved (1) developing a standard API for time series-like data; (2) developing a software package, tsds (time series data server), that implements this API and provides server-side super-setting, sub-setting, filtering, and uniform gridding of time series-like data; (3) making the data holdings from several key data providers in the heliophysics environment accessible through the tsds API; and (4) developing client-side software for standard data analysis packages (IDL, matlab, java, python, and excel) that allows access to a server running tsds. The goals of the original proposal have been met or exceeded. At present, the data holdings of 10 major hpde data sources (cdaweb, intermagnet, image, kyoto, lisird, USGS, swpc, virbo, supermag, WDC) are available, and community interest in the objectives of the project is strong. Over the past year, a heliophysics application programmers interface (API) ( hapi ) has been developed in collaboration with members of the hpde (heliophysics data environment) community. We seek support to develop software tools to expand the number of datasets available through this API. The steps required to allow this software to be used extensively by the hpde community include (1) develop a complete hpde API validation server, (2) develop hpde API clients for matlab, python, and javascript, (3) develop a reference implementation for a hpde API server and a set of tools that simplify use of the hpde API server, and (4) continue with participation in the development of the hapi specification.
