About this award

This federal contract award is a $90,194 grant for research awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to the University of Wisconsin System, a U.S. state government entity and 1862 land grant college.

The objective of the research is to develop new methods to retrieve attenuated backscatter coefficient and extinction data from the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) satellite instrument, while maintaining the high spatial and vertical resolution of the native observations while reducing noise. The methodology is based on medical image denoising algorithms that employ statistical techniques leveraging the forward and noise models.

This award is not associated with a larger contract vehicle and does not have a set-aside designation. The University of Wisconsin System is the prime contractor and there are no major subcontractors identified. The research is likely supporting NASA's Earth Science programs focused on atmospheric monitoring and climate research.

Description

Our primarily objective this proposal is to develop new methods to retrieve the attenuated backscatter coefficient and extinction from caliop observations which maintains the high spatial and vertical resolution of the native observations while significantly reducing the noise. The new methodology is based upon algorithms that were originally developed to denoise medical images, where the medical instruments employ the same type of photon detectors used by caliop and other atmospheric lidar instruments. The medical denoising algorithms are statistical image processing techniques which employ both the forward and noise models to perform the denoising, and this methodology allows for algorithms that outperform standard denoising techniques.
