About this award

This federal contract award is for a research project between NASA and Vanderbilt University to investigate the use of Graphical Safety Notation (GSN), Bayesian networks, and Systems Modeling Language (SysML) in constructing safety cases for systems containing commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) parts in radiation environments. The $317,491.65 grant project began on February 2, 2018 and is set to be completed by December 31, 2019. This research aims to develop an integrated approach using these modeling techniques to analyze the reliability of hardware and software components for space systems. No set-aside designation was indicated for this award, which was made to Vanderbilt University as the prime contractor by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Shared Services Center.

Description

NASA and vanderbilt university have collaborated on a project to investigate the usability of GSN, bayesian nets, and sysml in constructing safety cases for systems containing COTS parts in radiation environments. In years 1 and 2, an integrated approach using GSN, sysml and bayesian nets was developed and applied to the hardware aspects of a circuit board designed to detect and report single event upsets in an sram on a cubesat platform. In year 3 we propose investigating the application of the integrated safety-case approach to software on the sram test board, and combining the safety case for the hardware and software for a wholistic approach to analysis of reliability of space systems.
