About this award

This federal contract award is a $257,429 grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Trustees of Boston University, a private non-profit university, to conduct research on the generation mechanism and role of low-frequency hiss in the Earth's radiation belt. Over the remaining two years of the proposed project period, the research will statistically analyze wave and electron data from the Van Allen Probes mission to evaluate the relationship between low-frequency hiss excitation and energetic electron injection. The research will also continue to quantify the impact of plasmaspheric hiss on energetic electrons at different energy levels and locations. This grant does not have a set-aside designation.

Description

In the remaining two years of the proposed period, we propose to conduct the following tasks to complete the originally proposed project. Year 1: following the event analysis of the low-frequency hiss, we will statistically analyze both wave and electron data from van allen probes and perform linear growth rate calculations to systematically evaluate the generation mechanism of low-frequency hiss and investigate the relation between the excitation of low-frequency hiss and energetic electron injection. Year 2: we will also continue to evaluate the quantitative role of plasmaspheric hiss in energetic electrons at different energies in various l-MLT regions during multiple individual events, where electrons exhibit interesting dynamics in both fluxes and pitch angle distributions.
