Notice of Pre-AIA or AIA Status

The present application, filed on or after March 16, 2013, is being examined under the first inventor to file provisions of the AIA .

Response to Arguments

Applicant's arguments filed 2/10/2022 have been fully considered but they are not persuasive.

Applicant argues the following:

  1. Claims 1-3, 5-9, and 11-14 are allowable because the cited references, Debenedictis et al. and Becker, fail to disclose or suggest the following limitations: a) "an internal coupling element coupled to the external coupling element and configured to transmit power and/or data signals through the internal coupling element and the external coupling element, wherein the internal coupling element is sealed from the exterior of the device"

b) "the internal coupling element and the external coupling element are configured to transmit power and/or data signals through the external surface of the device"

c) "the external coupling element is configured to transmit power and/or data signals received from the internal coupling element through the external surface of the device to devices external to the device"

Regarding argument 1a), the Examiner respectfully disagrees. Debenedictis et al. discloses an internal coupling element (106/116) coupled to the external coupling element (102/112) and configured to transmit power and/or data signals through the internal coupling element and the external coupling element, wherein the internal coupling element is sealed from the exterior of the device (paragraph 0028, the internal component 106 is "hermetically sealed within the housing 104").

Regarding argument 1b), the Examiner respectfully disagrees. Debenedictis et al. discloses the internal coupling element (106/116) and the external coupling element (102/112) are configured to transmit power and/or data signals through the external surface of the device (paragraph 0028, "the internal component 106 is connected to the external component 102 through a bidirectional inductive coupling").

Regarding argument 1c), the Examiner respectfully disagrees. Debenedictis et al. discloses the external coupling element (102/112) is configured to transmit power and/or data signals received from the internal coupling element (106/116) through the external surface of the device to devices external to the device (paragraph 0028, "the internal component 106 is connected to the external component 102 through a bidirectional inductive coupling").

  1. Claims 4, 10, and 15 are allowable because Becker fails to cure the deficiencies of Debenedictis et al. regarding the limitations of claim 1.

Regarding argument 2, since the Examiner respectfully disagrees that Debenedictis et al. fails to disclose the limitations of claim 1 as described above, Becker is not required to cure any deficiencies of Debenedictis et al. Accordingly, the Examiner maintains the rejections of claims 4, 10, and 15.

Claim Rejections - 35 USC § 102

The following is a quotation of the appropriate paragraphs of 35 U.S.C. 102 that form the basis for the rejections under this section made in this Office action:

A person shall be entitled to a patent unless –

(a)(1) the claimed invention was patented, described in a printed publication, or in public use, on sale, or otherwise available to the public before the effective filing date of the claimed invention.

Claims 1-3, 5-9, and 11-14 are rejected under 35 U.S.C. 102(a)(1) as being anticipated by Debenedictis et al. (US 2010/0237852 A1).

Regarding claim 1, Debenedictis et al. discloses a device comprising:

an external coupling element (102/112) disposed on an external surface of the device (Figs. 1-2,
