The objective of this $123,521 Firm Fixed Price contract is to investigate passive technology that will enable criticality control of a Nuclear Thermal Propulsion (NTP) reactor during operation, with the goal of minimizing the need for mechanical movement of the control...
- This federal contract award to Plasma Processes, LLC, a small business, is for the development of diffusion bonding techniques to produce full-size tungsten cermet nuclear fuel rods for NASA's Nuclear Thermal Propulsion (NTP) program. NTP is a critical technology for human missions to Mars due to its increased specific impulse compared to traditional chemical propulsion. The $125,000 firm-fixed-price Phase I SBIR contract is focused on evaluating refractory metal interfacial coatings to...
- This contract was awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Plasma Processes, LLC, a small business, for the development of advanced vacuum plasma spray (VPS) processing techniques to produce long, hexagonal zirconium carbide (ZrC) based tie-tube support rods for nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP) systems. NTP has been identified as a critical technology for human missions to Mars due to its higher specific impulse compared to traditional chemical propulsion....
- This SBIR Phase II contract, awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), will support the development of a decay heat solution for Nuclear Thermal Propulsion (NTP) systems. The goal is to significantly reduce the amount of hydrogen required to cool down an NTP system after operation. The prime contractor is Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation - Technologies (Usnc-Space), a small business that specializes in advanced nuclear technologies for space applications. The contract...
- This federal contract award to the University of Tennessee (UT) is intended to support the development of nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP) technology. The goal is to identify and qualify nuclear fuel form properties through non-nuclear testing, which is essential for modeling fuel behavior and predicting performance. This work supports NASA's objective to expand human presence into the solar system, including a planned human mission to Mars in the 2030s. The $248,157.47 award, funded by NASA, is...
- This $20,570,930 firm fixed price definitive contract was awarded by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center to BWXT Nuclear Energy, Inc. to further the design of a low enriched uranium-based nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP) engine as part of a three-year technology development project managed by NASA's Game Changing Development program. The contract does not have a set-aside designation. Key subcontractors supporting the prime include Atkins Nuclear Solutions US, Inc., Ultra Safe Nuclear Corp,...
- This is a $124,415 firm-fixed-price Phase I SBIR contract awarded by NASA to Little Prairie Services LLC, doing business as Desert Fox Engineering Services. The contract supports the development of multi-physics analyses to document the safety of nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP) systems during launch. The goal is to reduce programmatic uncertainty around NTP technology by demonstrating the reactor will not become critical during potential impact or compaction scenarios. This work builds on prior...

NASA IS INTERESTED IN DEVELOPING A FACILITY TO TEST NUCLEAR THERMAL PROPULSION (NTP) ROCKET ENGINES. CURRENT NTP ENGINE DESIGNS ARE NOT EXPECTED TO RELEASE RADIOACTIVE FISSION PRODUCTS BUT, TO PROTECT THE SAFETY OF THE PUBLIC AND NASA PERSONNEL AND COMPLY WITH ENVIRONMENTAL REGULATIONS, A RADIONUCLIDE CAPTURE SYSTEM SHOULD BE IMPLEMENTED. THE THERMAL PROPULSION CAPTURE SYSTEM (TPCS) IS CURRENTLY BEING DEFINED FOR NTP ENGINE TESTING AT SSC (STENNIS SPACE CENTER). THE TPCS IS DESIGNED TO TOTALLY CONTAIN ALL OF THE NTP HYDROGEN EXHAUST BY REACTING IT WITH OXYGEN TO CREATE STEAM WHICH IS CONDENSED TO LIQUID WITH A WATER COOLED HEAT EXCHANGER AND STORED IN A TANK. A SECONDARY LIQUID NITROGEN COOLED HEAT EXCHANGER CONDENSES RESIDUAL OXYGEN FOR STORAGE IN A TANK AT CRYOGENIC TEMPERATURES. DURING TESTING OF THE NTP ENGINE, HYDROGEN WILL BE EXHAUSTED AT THE FULL FLOW RATE FOR AROUND AN HOUR AND DURING THIS TIME THE TPCS WILL PREVENT ANY POTENTIAL RADIONUCLIDE RELEASE. AFTER THE TEST FIRE, THE REACTOR WILL CONTINUE TO GENERATE HEAT SO THE ENGINE IS OPERATED IN A COOL-DOWN MODE WHERE HYDROGEN IS INJECTED AT A SLOWLY DIMINISHING FRACTION OF THE FULL FLOW RATE OVER SEVERAL WEEKS. DURING THE COOL-DOWN PHASE, IT WILL BE UNECONOMICAL TO CONTINUE TO OPERATE THE TPCS BECAUSE IT IS SIZED FOR OPERATION AT MUCH HIGHER FLOW RATES. INSTEAD A REGENERATIVE RADIONUCLIDE ADSORPTION AND DISPOSAL SYSTEM (RRAADS) COULD BE IMPLEMENTED TO TRAP RADIOACTIVE FISSION PROJECTS FROM THE EXHAUST ON DEMAND BEFORE FLARING THE SCRUBBED HYDROGEN IN THE ATMOSPHERE. THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO PERFORM TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT THAT WILL ALLOW A RADIONUCLIDE FILTRATION SYSTEM TO BE SIZED. TO DATE, A SYSTEM THAT CAN REMOVE NTP RADIONUCLIDES FROM HYDROGEN GAS EXHAUST HAS ONLY BEEN IMPLEMENTED ONCE. IN 1971, THE NUCLEAR FURNACE 1 (NF-1) EFFLUENT CAPTURE SYSTEM (ECS) DEMONSTRATED THE POTENTIAL FOR AN ACTIVATED CHARCOAL FILTER TO TRAP RADIONUCLIDES FROM NTP EXHAUST. THE RESULTS FROM THE NF-1 PROJECT INDICATE THAT BETWEEN ABOUT 60% TO 99.99% OF RADIONUCLIDES WERE CAPTURED BUT INCONSISTENCIES IN THE NF-1 TEST RESULTS PREVENT THE ADSORPTION MODEL USED TO SIZE THE ECS FROM BEING APPLIED TOWARDS THE DESIGN OF THE COOL-DOWN MODE RRAADS. DURING THIS TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT PROJECT A RADIONUCLIDE ADSORPTION DEMONSTRATION SYSTEM (RADS) WILL BE CONSTRUCTED AND TESTED TO VALIDATE THE ADSORPTION MODEL WHICH WILL BE USED TO DESIGN THE ON-DEMAND RADIONUCLIDE CONTAINMENT SYSTEM THAT WILL BE REQUIRED FOR FUTURE NTP ENGINE TESTING.
