About this award

This federal contract was awarded by the Stennis Space Center, a civilian agency within the U.S. government, to the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) to develop a proof-of-concept system for detecting and locating invisible hydrogen fires. The $103,751 firm-fixed-price contract was issued on May 6, 2016 with a completion date of November 5, 2017. As a subcontractor, Innovative Imaging & Research Corp, a woman-owned small business, was tasked with assessing hydrogen flame phenomenology and determining potential spectral signatures and observables. This effort supports Stennis Space Center's need for a reliable system to identify the location and magnitude of hydrogen fires, which pose a threat at their numerous facilities. The contract leverages USM's expertise in areas like materials science and environmental monitoring, and the university's experience collaborating with government agencies on research and development initiatives. No set-aside designation was noted for this award.

Description

Stennis operates numerous facilities where hydrogen fires pose a threat, and needed a device that would safely indicate the exact location and magnitude of these invisible flames. While fire detectors do exist, they do not provide a reliable method for locating hydrogen fire flames or determining their extent. Technological advances in the last decade have the potential to enhance this technology and deliver much more capable systems. Of particular interest are system which minimize the potential for false detections and alerts. The purpose of this activity to assess current mission requirements, advancements in new imaging detector technologies and develop a proof of concept system demonstration.
