About this award

This federal contract award to the National Institute of Aerospace Associates (NIA), a non-profit research institute, was issued by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Langley Research Center. The $1,119,194.00 cost-plus-fixed-fee delivery order continues the development of NASA's Global Demand Model (GDM) and includes two Integrated Systems Analysis and Assessment Capability (ISAAC) studies. The GDM work will upgrade the prototype to a mature demand prediction tool, while the ISAAC studies will examine global commercial aircraft emissions and on-demand electric aircraft mobility concepts. This work supports NASA's Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate's portfolio analysis and technology development efforts. Major subcontractors include Georgia Tech Research Corporation and Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University. The award did not utilize any set-aside designations.

Description

Aviation global demand forecast model development and isaac (integrated systems analysis and assessment capability) studies the NASA aeronautics research mission directorate's (armd) portfolio analysis management office (pamo) has developed a global aviation demand forecasting capability prototype that can forecast the annual commercial air traffic operations between nearly one thousand worldwide airports. The global demand model (GDM) can predict trip demand based on local gross domestic product (GDP), and distribute those trips to other airports worldwide, creating a global air transportation network. This task order (task) will continue the development of GDM, taking IT from prototype stage to a mature demand prediction tool, and adding new features. In addition, two integrated systems analysis and assessment capability (isaac) sponsored transportation studies will be conducted. The first, a global commercial aircraft emissions study, will be performed using global aviation operations forecasts from GDM. These forecasts will be combined with calculated trajectories to compute CO2 and low altitude NOX emissions for the global commercial aircraft fleet.the second study will support an on-demand electric aircraft mobility concept. The concept features an aircraft with electric propulsion that is capable of vertical takeoff and landing from a helipad sized area with a range of 150 to 200 miles and cruise speed of 150 to 200 MPH. IT could greatly enhance regional mobility, primarily for commuting. Analysis of the feasibility and demand for the concept for a likely early adopter market, specifically the silicon valley, will provide insight into the utility of this concept and applicability to other regions of the united states.
