About this award

This federal contract award, issued by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Langley Research Center, tasks the National Institute of Aerospace Associates (NIA), a non-profit research institute, to update the Advanced Air Transport Technology (AATT) project's technology dashboard with models for high aspect ratio wing (HARW) technologies, including tow-steered structures, natural laminar flow, and active flow control. The award also requires NIA to conduct trade studies on HARW design parameters, such as aspect ratio, and assess their impact on fuel burn, landing-takeoff NOx emissions, and certification noise. The total potential value of this Cost Plus Fixed Fee delivery order contract is $458,164.00, and it does not have a set-aside designation. NIA has subcontracted a portion of the work to the Georgia Tech Research Corporation, a non-profit research organization and state institution of higher education, to support the HARW technology modeling and trade studies.

Description

High aspect ratio wing subproject technology modeling. The advanced air transport technology (aatt) project s overarching goal is to explore and develop technologies and concepts to revolutionize the energy efficiency and environmental compatibility of fixed wing transport aircraft. To identify technology and vehicle solutions that meet the project s fuel burn, noise, and emissions goals requires the use of system-level analysis with the appropriate level of fidelity to quantify feasibility, interdependencies between technologies, benefits, and degradations. Prior work has accomplished parametric technology models for tube and wing configurations with capability of analyzing fuel burn, noise and NOX impacts for predefined or user defined technology combinations in order to gain understand the interactions of specific technologies, and packages of technologies, on the vehicle trade space, including the impact of unconventional configurations. Specifically, NASA is interested in tradeoffs between fuel burn, landing-takeoff (LTO) NOX emissions, and certification noise. The major objective for the proposed research is to update the aatt technology dashboard developed under contract no. NNL13AA08B task 80LARC18F0149 with high aspect ratio wing (harw) subproject technologies, including tow-steered structures, natural laminar flow (NLF), and active flow control (AFC), and to perform trade studies on harw design parameters, including aspect ratio, with respect to relevant performance metrics, including fuel burn, using the updated harw subproject technology models.
