About this award
NASA's Langley Research Center issued a $122,450 delivery order to National Institute of Aerospace Associates on August 10, 2018, for pulsed energy deposition research aimed at reducing ground sonic boom signature of supersonic aircraft.
The order extends prior work initiated under NIA task 80LARC17F0050 and evaluates benefits of pulsed energy deposition by electromagnetic devices—including femtosecond to nanosecond lasers, microwaves, and DC discharges—for enhanced aerodynamic performance. Prior research on simple aerodynamic shapes has demonstrated significant aerodynamic benefit including drag reduction at supersonic and hypersonic speeds. Place of performance is Hampton, VA. The order carries a cost-plus-fixed-fee pricing structure with an ultimate completion date of December 31, 2022.
Description
Pulsed energy deposition for reduction in ground sonic boom signature. NASA is evaluating the benefits of pulsed energy deposition by electromagnetic devices for enhanced aerodynamic performance and reduction in boom signature of supersonic aircraft. Potential devices include femtosecond to nanosecond lasers, microwaves and DC discharges. Prior research in the U.S., europe and russia on simple aerodynamic shapes (e.g., hemisphere- and cone-cylinder models) has shown significant aerodynamic benefit including drag reduction at supersonic and hypersonic speeds. This task is an extension of the work initiated under NIA task 80LARC17F0050.
