About this award
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Langley Research Center awarded a $196,531.00 cost-plus-fixed-fee delivery order contract to the National Institute of Aerospace Associates (NIA), a non-profit research institute, to conduct further analysis on the operational aspects of on-demand air mobility (ODM). This follow-on study will build upon a previous Phase I effort that developed a notional concept of operations for ODM in the Los Angeles area. The goals of this Phase II contract are to investigate ODM aviation network throughput capacity, scalability constraints, and regional variations in these constraints, while maintaining a systems-level perspective on the ODM challenge. NIA will seek to interface with other research programs and subject matter experts to perform specialized research as needed. This contract is not associated with any set-aside program.
Description
Further analysis of the operational aspects of on-demand mobility. The NIA working with the MIT international center for air transportation (icat) conducted phase i of the operational aspects of on demand air mobility study from february 2016 through july 2017. This first phase of the project completed a case study in LOS angeles to identify key system-level constraints for the implementation of on demand mobility (ODM) aviation services in the context of urban air mobility. The work developed a notional concept of operations (conops) for twelve reference missions in LOS angeles and considered their implementation with respect to air traffic control, regulatory, available infrastructure, social, environmental, community acceptance and system interface factors based on current or projected future environments. The intent of this task is to build upon the findings of the phase i effort through a follow-on study. Primary goals of the follow-on study are to investigate ODM aviation network throughput capacity, scalability constraints, and the region to region variability of these constraints. A key feature of the research project will be to maintain a systems perspective on the ODM aviation challenge. The performer will seek to interface with other research programs, subject matter experts and consultants for specialized deep dive research where necessary.
