Description

This statement of work (SOW) is the result of a proposal submitted by boeing engineering, operations & technology boeing research & technology in response to NASA aeronautics research mission directorate (armd) letter request for phase 2 proposal submissions for the subsonic fixed wing - advanced concept studies for subsonic commercial transport aircraft in february, 2010. The subsonic fixed wing project (SFW) is performing research into concepts, technologies, and tools that will enable dramatic reductions in noise and emissions, and increase the performance (fuel burn and reduced field length) characteristics of subsonic/transonic fixed wing aircraft. The SFW project pursues a multi-generational approach addressing the needs of today but with an emphasis on establishing the technological foundations necessary to enable the capabilities needed in the decades ahead. This effort is intended to identify high pay-off research that builds on the results of phase 1 research to further advance and leverage the identified advanced airframe and propulsion concepts, as well as corresponding enabling technologies. The following are the research objectives: 1. Experimental and higher-fidelity exploration of key technologies to investigate the prioritized technology challenges identified in phase 1 and begin moving toward the realization of the proposed vehicle concept(s) capabilities that would enable an entry into service (EIS) in the 2030-2035 timeframe, market permitting; 2. N+3 advanced vehicle concept study to further explore, refine, and otherwise update the preferred n+3 advanced vehicle and component concept(s) identified and developed during phase 1; and 3. N+4 advanced vehicle concept study to leverage the substantial investment of phase 1 and study the effect of additional technology development time beyond that assumed in phase 1.
