Description

NRA: NNH07ZEA001N-HYP1. Proposal: 07-HYP-0087. Entitled: development of system-level optimization with uncertainty. Background: the goal of this project is to develop a capability for optimization with uncertainty, demonstrate this capability on a hypersonic vehicle test case using system-level analysis, and to use the demonstration to evaluate certain design process issues. This study supports key milestones HYP.4.02.12 and HYP.4.01.18 of the hypersonics project under the NASA fundamental aeronautics program. Scope of work: this effort is divided into two phases. In the first phase, methods for evaluation of system-level uncertainty and for optimization with consideration of uncertainty will be developed. In the second phase, the capability of the methods will be demonstrated on a system-level analysis, including the incorporation of selected increased-fidelity discipline analyses. Applicable documents/background: (a) NASA research announcement (NRA) NNH07ZEA001N-HYP1. Description of tasks/technical requirements: the contractor shall perform the following tasks: task 1.0 method development 1.1 system-level uncertainty 1.1.1 the contractor shall develop a minimum of one and no more than three candidate methods for the evaluation of system-level uncertainty that provides streamlined and rapid execution during optimization. These candidate methods shall be discussed during telecon with NASA (see SOW 3.3), to review the benefits and issues with all of the candidate methods. The contractor shall use the candidate method mutually agreed upon by NASA and the contractor for subsequent method development and demonstration of capability. The selected method shall be approved in writing (via email) by the NASA cotr. 1.1.2 the contactor shall develop software to implement the selected method and shall demonstrate the capability of this software on a subset of analyses selected from a system-level analysis. The subset of analyses shall be mutually agreed upon by NASA and the contractor and shall be approved in writing (via email) by the NASA cotr. 1.1.3 the contractor shall deliver the software (i.e., source code for modelcenter modules and wrappers) along with documentation describing the methodology implemented in the software, the limitations of the software, and input and output parameters. (attachment 3, item 1) 1.2 optimization with uncertainty 1.2.1 the contractor shall develop a method to incorporate an optimization process with consideration for uncertainty. This method shall be discussed during telecon with NASA (see SOW 3.4), to review the benefits and issues of the method. 1.2.2 the contactor shall develop software to implement this method and shall demonstrate the capability of this software on the previously agreed to subset of analyses selected from a system-level analysis. 1.2.3 the contractor shall deliver the software (i.e., source code for modelcenter modules and wrappers) along with documentation describing the methodology implemented in the software, the limitations of the software, and input and output parameters. (attachment 3, item 2) task 2.0 method application and refinement 2.1 system-level analysis demonstration 2.1.1 the contractor shall apply the software developed in tasks 1.1 and 1.2 to the evaluation of system-level uncertainty and system optimization with uncertainty on a hypersonic vehicle test case with selected discipline analysis tools. The contractor shall hold a telecon with NASA (see SOW 3.5) to specify a hypersonic vehicle system test case, including the system mission definition and to specify the selection of discipline analysis tools to be used in the evaluation of the methods. The contractor shall use the test case and discipline analysis tools mutually agreed upon by NASA and the contractor for subsequent evaluation. The test case and discipline analysis tools shall be approved in writing (via email) by the NASA cotr. 2.1.2 the contactor shall modify and
