About this award
This is a delivery order issued by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Kennedy Space Center to Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC), a woman-owned small business, for the design, procurement, and delivery of hardware to support the Advanced Plant Habitat (APH) unit on the International Space Station (ISS). The $1,763,863.18 firm-fixed-price contract includes five kits for the Water Recovery and Distribution Subsystem (WRADS) and APH maintenance and air sampling. The APH provides an environmentally controlled chamber for plant research on the ISS. This delivery order is part of a larger NASA program to develop plant growth technologies for long-duration space missions. No set-aside was used for this award.
Description
Flight support equipment, RE-design, repair and replace advanced plant habitat (APH) unit, sustainment and request for information. The contractor shall design and procure hardware required to assemble and support the activation of the flight unit on the international space station (ISS). The hardware will consist of five kits which are the water recovery and distribution subsystem (wrads) reservoir refill kit, wrads reservoir sample kit, wrads maintenance kit, APH air sample kit, and APH maintenance kit. General description: the plant habitat (PH) provides a large, enclosed, environmentally controlled chamber designed to support commercial and fundamental plant research onboard the international space station (ISS) for a minimum of 1-year continuous operation without maintenance. IT is configured as a quad-locker payload to be mounted in a standard expedite the processing of experiments to the space station (express) rack in the U.S. Laboratory. The PH integrates proven microgravity plant growth technologies with newly developed fault tolerance and recovery technology to increase overall efficiency, reliability, and robustness. In addition, the PH provides single-level contained, embedded glove ports for the crew's use when sampling plant materials or conducting experiments. The design is based on an open architecture concept to allow critical subsystems to be removed and replaced onboard the ISS. There are a number of design characteristics that should be considered in the design of PH flight and ground systems, including: - safety and mission success - design for minimum risk - failure propagation - programmatic risk; -- minimizing life cycle cost and improving operability and supportability, including design for maintainability, commonality, interoperability, interchangeability, standardization, upgradeability, obsolescence tolerance and automation -- need to accomplish major program and project milestones in a timely manner to achieve the milestones established by the GP & r project. - maintainability - design simplicity - interface simplicity - design for human operability
