About this award
Empirical Systems Aerospace Inc. (Esaero), a small business aerospace engineering firm, was awarded a $249,997.82 firm-fixed-price contract by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Armstrong Flight Research Center. Under this contract, Esaero will perform design and integration work in cooperation with NASA for the Scalable Convergent Electric Propulsion Technology Operational Researcher (SCEPTOR) project, which aims to retrofit a Tecnam P2006T aircraft with an electric propulsion system. The contract requires Esaero to develop and test safety-critical software for the cruise motor controller and battery management system to meet NASA standards, as well as provide test support for the cockpit display system and throttle encoder. This contract is associated with NASA's SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) program Phase III efforts.
Description
The contractor will perform in cooperation with NASA the design and integration of an electric propulsion system for the scalable convergent electric propulsion technology operational researcher (sceptor) project. The sceptor project will retrofit a production tecnam P2006T aircraft (minus the rotax engines) with an electric propulsion system. Two aircraft subsystems, the cruise motor controller (CMC) and the battery management system (BMS), contain safety critical software. In order to proceed to flight, the sceptor project must first be granted approval to fly by the afrc airworthiness and flight safety review board (afsrb). Authority to fly is granted after the sceptor project presents to the board its plan for airworthiness and is subsequently agreed to by the board. This requires that all flight safety critical software be designed and tested to NASA standards as specified in the software management plan (SMP-cept-001). The sceptor BMS and CMC software systems have been deemed level 1-s safety critical software. They will need to be unit tested and also verified at the system level. Also, NASA requires test support for the cockpit display system (CDS) and throttle encoder (TE) system.
