About this award

This is a firm fixed-price Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract awarded by the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command (RDECOM) to Sivananthan Laboratories, Inc., a minority-owned small business. The $147,453.66 contract aims to tie molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) growth parameters to strained layer superlattice (SLS) material performance, using Stillinger-Weber-based molecular dynamics and QuantCAD quantum mechanics methods to predict the outcomes of process changes or new processes. The contract supports research to simulate MBE growth parameters and calculate carrier lifetimes, which can be used to advance infrared imaging, quantum sensing, and advanced materials technologies.

Description

The scope of the present work is to tie molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) growth parameters to strained layer superlattice (SLS) material performance in a manner that predicts the outcomes of minor process changes or entirely new processes. The stillinger weber (SW) based molecular dynamics (MD) method can simulate an array of MBE growth parameters and formulas, and the quantcad QM based method will provide energy levels for the resulting atomic structures. These can then be used to calculate carrier lifetimes from the MBE growth simulations.
