About this award

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) awarded a $409,520.00 definitive contract to Purdue University to develop and demonstrate multi-functional millimeter-to-centimeter scale robotic platforms with a focus on untethered mobility, maneuverability, and dexterity. This effort, known as the Short-Range Independent Microrobotic Platforms (SHRIMP) program, will also provide foundational research in micro-actuator materials and energy efficient power systems for extremely size, weight, and power (SWAP) constrained microrobotic systems. The contract, which does not have a set-aside designation, aims to enable applications such as search and rescue, disaster relief, hazardous environment inspection, in-flight control of aerodynamic platforms, steerable optics, and prosthetics. The contract runs through September 1, 2020.

Description

The dapra short-range independent microrobotic platforms (shrimp) program will develop and demonstrate, through a series of olympic-themed competitions, multi-functional MM-to-CM scale robotic platforms with a focus on untethered mobility, maneuverability, and dexterity. To achieve this goal, shrimp will also provide foundational research in the area of micro-actuator materials and energy efficient power systems for extremely swap-constrained microrobotic systems. IT is expected that such advances will be enabling for applications including search and rescue, disaster relief, hazardous environment inspection, in-flight control of aerodynamic platforms, steerable optics, and prosthetics.
