About this award
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) awarded a definitive cost-plus-fixed-fee contract valued at $7.8 million to Northrop Grumman Systems Corporation Electronic Systems Division for the Intelligent Design of Electronic Assets (IDEA) program. The contract, awarded June 8, 2018, with performance completion targeted for July 7, 2020, supports DARPA's objective to develop a fully automated, human-independent circuit layout generation platform. This software solution will enable users without electronic design expertise to complete physical design of complex electronic hardware, including application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs), system-in-package (SiP) devices, and printed circuit boards (PCBs). The IDEA platform will transform complete design netlists into manufacturable layout databases through developed infrastructure, algorithms, methods, and software. Work is to be performed at Northrop Grumman's facility in Linthicum Heights, Maryland.
This contract represents a non-set-aside award to a large prime contractor competing on merit within DARPA's advanced technology development portfolio. Northrop Grumman Corporation, the parent entity, is a global aerospace and defense technology company with extensive experience delivering sophisticated electronic systems and advanced research solutions across multiple defense agencies. The award aligns with DARPA's mission to accelerate innovation in critical technology domains and reflects the agency's investment in automating complex design processes to reduce barriers to entry for electronic hardware development and accelerate rapid prototyping capabilities for defense applications.
Description
The overall goal of the intelligent design of electronic assets (idea) program is to develop a fully automated no human in the loop circuit layout generator that enables users with no electronic design expertise to complete physical design of electronic hardware. The idea layout platform will support automated physical layout of multiple types of electronic components, including analog and digital socs, sips, and pcbs. Idea will develop the infrastructure, algorithms, methods and software required to successfully demonstrate no human in the loop physical layout, transforming a complete design netlist into a manufacturable layout database.
