About this award

This is a cooperative agreement awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center to the Bay Area Environmental Research Institute (BAER Institute), a non-profit research organization based in California. The $5,039,039.00 contract aims to develop a fundamental understanding of the stability of planetary atmospheres, investigating the mechanisms of impact erosion and hydrodynamic escape that influence whether solar system bodies and exoplanets retain their atmospheres. The work supports NASA's theoretical modeling of solar system and proto-solar nebula processes. The contract does not have a set-aside designation. BAER Institute also holds two significant Indefinite Delivery Vehicle (IDV) contracts with the U.S. Geological Survey for global food security support and crop analysis, leveraging the institute's proprietary machine learning algorithms and computational capabilities.

Description

The aim of this work is to develop a fundamental understanding of the stability of planetary atmospheres. Preliminary work shows that the division between solar system bodies and exoplanets with and without atmospheres follow trends that are potentially consistent with two different atmospheric escape processes. The two mechanisms are impact erosion, when gases are lost as a result of large body impacts, and hydrodynamic escape, when atmospheres expand and escape because of heating by stellar irradiation. Data suggest that impact erosion obliterates atmospheres when median impact velocities exceed -5 times the escape velocity. Alternatively, the observed division could be interpreted as a power law where stellar heating goes as the fourth power of escape velocity, which might be explained if hydrodynamic escape is responsible for atmospheric loss rather than impact erosion. Our investigation will establish an understanding of parameters that favor one escape process versus the other, elucidating which process explains the empirical atmospheric stability limits.
