About this award
This is a $109,714.22 cooperative agreement awarded by the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center to Oregon State University (OSU) to conduct a citizen science needs assessment for the GLOBE program. GLOBE is an international educational and citizen science research program that allows teachers and students to collect environmental data.
The objective is to expand GLOBE beyond just classroom participants to include non-students as citizen scientists, while maintaining the program's focus on collecting scientifically valid data. OSU, a public land-grant university with expertise in fields like environmental science and natural resource management, will work closely with GLOBE leadership to achieve this goal. The award does not have a set-aside designation. This effort supports the broader GLOBE program, which is funded by NASA.
Description
Globe citizen science needs assessment globe is an international educational and citizen science research program that allows teachers and their students to take part in a variety of data collection activities that are normed and validated. After teachers receive training on the use of data collection protocols they can engage their students in research activities and provide their data into databases that scientists can use for original environmental research and monitoring. With funding from NASA through a corporate agreement notice, the NASA goddard space flight center will work closely with globe leadership to expand the current scope of globe beyond elementary and secondary classroom teachers and their students. Initially limited to a small set of research protocols, globe will experiment on how to include non‐students as citizens scientists while keeping a program structure that was geared towards generating scientifically valid data.
