About this award

This is a $766,203.47 cooperative agreement awarded by NASA's Shared Services Center to the Rector & Visitors of the University of Virginia (UVA) to address fundamental challenges in developing, validating, and executing models that contribute to assuring the safety of complex aerospace systems. The project aligns with NASA's subtopic 2.5 on systems safety, model-based systems engineering, and modeling/simulation of multi-agent teams in air traffic management applications. UVA, as the prime contractor, will leverage its expertise in systems engineering, safety analysis, and modeling/simulation to create a framework supporting model-based safety analysis with rigorous methods. This award is not associated with a set-aside program.

Description

We propose towards subtopic 2.5 with a multi-disciplinary team addressing fundamental challenges related to developing, validating, and executing models that contribute to assuring the safety of tomorrow's complex aerospace systems. The multi-disciplinary team has expertise in systems safety, model-based systems engineering, and modeling and simulation of multi-agent teams in a diverse set of air traffic management applications including trajectory-based operations. We propose that systems engineering principles taken from multidisciplinary design, from model-based design and systems engineering, and from new, emerging methods for safety analysis of complex, coupled systems can be applied to extend the methods given in ARP 4761 to create comprehensive and rigorous methods for model-based safety analysis (mbsa). Our primary task is to create a framework supporting mbsa with the following key attributes.
