About this award
This is a $776,932.59 cooperative agreement awarded by NASA to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to conduct a multidisciplinary exploration of ultra-efficient commercial vehicles that employ hybrid electric propulsion. The project aims to define appropriate missions and applications for hybrid electric propulsion, identify technology gaps, and develop a roadmap to achieve Technology Readiness Level 6 for launching a product. The team includes researchers from Aurora Flight Sciences, Carnegie Mellon University, MIT, and the University of Southern California, spanning aerodynamics, aircraft design, propulsion, power electrical systems, and electronics. This contract does not have a set-aside designation and supports NASA's Feasibility of Hybrid-Electric Propulsion for Ultra-Efficient Commercial Aircraft program.
Description
This document is in response to the NASA solicitation for aeronautical concepts that improve mobility. The work proposed is a multi disciplinary exploration of ultra efficient commercial vehicles that employ hybrid electric propulsion, including airframe and propulsion system architecture options that can be integrated to meet a range of vehicle missions. The proposed project has as its goal the definition of missions and applications that are most appropriate for hybrid electric propulsion, the identification of technology gaps, and the development of a rigorous technology roadmap towards the TRL 6 levels necessary for launching a product. The team that has been created to carry out the project represents aurora flight sciences, carnegie mellon university, massachusetts institute of technology, and university of southern california, and spans the disciplines of aerodynamics, aircraft design, propulsion, power electrical svstems and electronics.
