About this award
This federal contract award is a three-year Cooperative Agreement between the Army Aeroflightdynamics Directorate (AFDD) at the NASA Ames Research Center and the Psychology Department at San Jose State University. The award, valued at $8,826,122.67, will support collaborative research efforts in advanced rotorcraft research, including areas of adaptive autonomy, future lift systems, and human-centered display design. The work will involve scientists from the AFDD at NASA Ames and researchers from San Jose State University, who will conduct fundamental and applied research to develop models and methods that expand knowledge in autonomous flight, flight control, and human information processing. There is no set-aside designation for this contract, and the anticipated completion date is June 30, 2020. The prime contractor is the San Jose State University Research Foundation, the authorized organizational representative and research arm of San Jose State University.
Description
The present unsolicited proposal requests funding of a three-year cooperative agreement between the army aeroflightdynamics directorate (afdd) at the NASA ames research center and the psychology department at SAN jose state university. The funding will support the cooperative research efforts of the project director, project associates, project assistants, and other project personnel in advanced rotorcraft research in the areas of adaptive autonomy, future lift systems, and human-centered display design. The proposed period of performance is july 1, 2016 to june 30, 2019. In the following sections, several new and unique research and development collaborations are described that individually and collectively fill knowledge gaps in the areas of adaptive autonomy, future lift systems, and human-centered display design. The original work proposed here will involve collaboration with scientists in the army aeroflightdynamics directorate at the NASA ames research center. The directorate conducts fundamental MD applied research in target areas. The fundamental activities of SAN jose state university personnel include conducting generic, disciplinary research to develop models and methods that expand our knowledge of autonomous flight, flight control and handling qualities, and human information processing. We also seek to apply models of flight control to aid in the prediction of the response characteristics of current and future rotorcraft. This knowledge CM then be applied to address specific problems in a variety of aerospace settings. For example, by understanding the effectiveness of machine vision technologies and advanced obstacle field navigation algorithms, we can improve the robustness and reliability of the guidance and control laws for autonomous rotorcraft flight through unfamiliar airspace as well as landing in unfamiliar and often hostile terrain.
