About this award

This federal contract award, identified as NNX15AW95A, is a Cooperative Agreement funded by NASA to support the Seti Institute in conducting molecular analysis of soils, water, and microecosystems to research functional biodiversity, evolutionary ecology, and phylogenetic origins. The award, with a ceiling value of $697,945.00, is part of the "Microbial Endosymbionts: Early Origins, Evolution and Biogeography" major program and does not have a set-aside designation. The Seti Institute, a non-profit organization specializing in astrobiology, planetary science, and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, is the prime contractor for this award. The contract supports the Institute's research and development activities, which often involve collaboration with universities and other partners, and contribute to NASA's space exploration initiatives.

Description

This CO operative agreement is funded from the successful proposal new lineages of microbial endosymbionts of the basidiomycete extremophile pisolithus early origins evolution and biogeography and will provide support for molecular analysis of soils water and microecosystems for functional biodiversity evolutionary ecology and phylogenetic origins research. Maintenance of ecosystem function can depend upon species diversity and evidence shows that gains or losses of species that perform different functions can significantly alter ecosystem processes. Molecular methods will be employed to address issues of functional biodiversity and functional similarity in the context of microbial communities including but not restricted to ectomycorrhizal EM and soil fungal communities communities in contaminated groundwater and in extreme enviroimients.
