About this award

This federal contract award, valued at $199,535.34, was made by the Shared Services Center (an alternate name for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration) to the University of Illinois to develop an integrated power generation and energy storage system with active thermal management capabilities for small satellites. The system will use carbon fiber solar panels with microvascular fluid channels to provide battery cooling and cooling for other satellite components. This program aims to increase the capabilities of deep space CubeSats, enabling more powerful and heat-intensive systems than currently available. The contract is a cooperative agreement with no set-aside designation. The University of Illinois has a history of serving as both a prime contractor and subcontractor on various federal research and development projects for government agencies like the Department of Defense and NASA.

Description

The development of an integrated power generation and energy storage system with an active thermal management system is proposed. Carbon fiber solar panels will contain microvascular fluid channels, and provide battery cooling and a cold plate for other satellite devices. The system is scalable from 6U cubesats up to 100 KG small satellites. In a 6U configuration, a three-panel array can generate over 100 w and produce over 50 w of cooling. This program will significantly increase the capabilities of deep space cubesats, allowing more powerful and hotter spacecraft systems than are currently available with state of the art commercial systems. This new system will fulfill the needs of upcoming NASA cislunar mission and beyond.
