About this award

This federal contract award is a three-year $1,048,354.00 cooperative agreement between the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the SETI Institute, a non-profit scientific organization. The contract, titled "Understanding Mars Surface Processes", supports the SETI Institute's responsibilities as part of the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE), including leading the education and public outreach effort, as well as conducting research on the role of water in the formation of Martian geological features. The agreement also includes the "Geologists' Field Assistant" project, which seeks to develop science analysis algorithms using image and spectral data to improve planetary surface exploration. This contract is not associated with any socioeconomic set-aside designations.

Description

This report outlines a new three-year cooperative agreement entitled understanding mars surface processes. The proposal contains four broad tasks. Task i outlines DR. Gulicks hirise science CO-i team responsibilities as part of the mars reconnaissance orbiters high resolution imaging science experiment (hirise). Task 2 supports the PIS responsibilities for leading and developing hirises education and public outreach effort and the NASA clickworkers efforts. Task 3 outlines the PIS science task of understanding the role of water in the formation of gully, channel and valley systems on mars. Task 4 outlines the PIS continuing research and technology development effort known as the geologists field assistant project. This project seeks to develop science analysis algorithms using image and spectral (raman spectra in particular) data of science targets of interest to return higher-level science information during planetary surface or terrestrial field exploration.
