About this award
This is a three-year cooperative agreement between the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the University of Illinois to provide benchmark measurements of turbulent compressible mixing layers. The primary objective is to generate a comprehensive and well-documented dataset to enable sensitive testing of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model predictions of the effects of compressibility on turbulence and spatial development of mixing between two streams. The $794,838 contract has no set-aside designation and will fund research to characterize the near and far-field behavior of the mixing layers across a range of convective Mach numbers, velocity ratios, and density ratios. This data will serve as a valuable reference for validating Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS), Large Eddy Simulation (LES), and Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) CFD models.
Description
A three-year research program is proposed, the primary objective of which is to provide benchmark measurements of turbulent compressible mixing layers. These data will provide a fundamental basis of comparison for rans LES and DNS predictions of this canonical flow. Unlike past experiments the test section geometry inflow and boundary conditions including the incoming boundary layers and corner flows to the mixing layers will be completely documented. The developing region immediately after separation from the splitter plate will be measured and reported in detail in addition to the far-field fully developed region. A range of convective mach numbers velocity ratios and density ratios will be examined. In total these cases will provide a comprehensive and well documented dataset that will provide sensitive tests of the effects of compressibility on the turbulence and spatial development of the mixing of two streams in both the near and far fields.
