About this award

This is a cooperative agreement awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to the University of Maryland, College Park, a state-controlled institution of higher learning. The $712,972.62 contract focuses on investigating and quantifying the impacts of fire on Alaskan tundra, specifically examining changes to disturbance regimes, permafrost distribution, and the hydrologic system. This research aims to assess the region's vulnerability to ongoing and future environmental change, as well as the effects on carbon cycling in this ecosystem. The University of Maryland, College Park is the prime contractor, and the award has no set-aside designation. The University System of Maryland, which oversees the University of Maryland, College Park, has also received various federal contracts and grants for research, education, and IT services across multiple government agencies.

Description

The proposed project will focus on investigating and quantifying fire-induced changes in alaskan tundra with a specific aim to assess the region's vulnerability to on-going and future environmental change and the changes to carbon cycling in this ecosystem. In particular we aim to address several specific above-identified research priority areas including: 1) what processes are contributing to changes in disturbance regimes and what are the impacts of these changes? 2) what processes are controlling changes in the distribution and properties of permafrost and what are the impacts of these changes? And 3) what are the causes and consequences of changes in the hydrologic system, specifically the amount, temporal distribution, and discharge of surface and subsurface water?
