About this award

This federal contract award, NNX15AQ50A, was granted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to develop an unmanned air vehicle capable of autonomous search and rescue missions in forested areas. The $798,211.17 cooperative agreement aims to address the challenges of flight under a tree canopy and coordination between multiple vehicles. The project will develop new algorithms for information-centric autonomy, enabling vehicles to use onboard sensors to estimate their position and the surrounding environment, make planning decisions in dynamic, poorly known conditions, and coordinate with other vehicles and operators. This contract has no set-aside designation and leverages MIT's expertise in advanced research and development for federal agencies.

Description

This proposal describes a collaborative project between MIT and NASA langley research center. The project objective is to develop an unmanned air vehicle that can autonomously perform a search and rescue mission in a forested area. This capability is novel because IT addresses both the challenges of flight under the tree canopy and the challenges of multiple vehicle CO-ordination. We propose to develop new algorithms information-centric autonomy that enable vehicles to use on-board sensors to estimate their position and the structure of environment around them, to make planning decisions in poorly known, dynamic environments and to share information and CO-ordinate with other vehicles and operators.
