Description

California state university LOS angeles proposes to establish a NASA data intensive research and education center in stem direct stem to conduct collaborative research and training in areas of hydrology and climate change computational physics and cloud computing that directly contibute to NASA's mission goals. The vast amount of data collected from NASA's missions during recent decades has advanced scientific research into a new ERA of intensive computation and modeling. Jet propulsion laboratory JPL and the university of california irvine UCI have recently established the center for data science and technology, and data science initiative respectively to address some of these needs. But there is a tremendous need presently largely unmetfor educational institutions with extremely diverse student bodies such as CAL state LA to become involved in training a new generation of scientists and engineers especially members of underrepresented minorities in areas of technology in data analysis. Direct stem will have an overarching goal of recruiting highly competitive minority students giving them direct NASA research experience in scientific computing and data analysis and inspiring them to become future leaders in stem related professions.
