About this award

This federal contract award, NNX15AL94A, was made by the Shared Services Center, a civilian agency, to the Regents of the University of Minnesota, doing business as the Office of Sponsored Projects Administration. The contract is for the simulation of shock propagation at the NASA Ames Research Center's East (Electric Arc Shock Tube) Facility, which is used to generate extreme conditions behind strong shock waves. The contract has a ceiling value of $149,991.91 and a period of performance through October 30, 2017. It is a cooperative agreement and does not have a set-aside designation. The University of Minnesota, a major land-grant research institution, is serving as the prime contractor to provide specialized research and measurement services related to this shock propagation simulation project for the NASA Ames Research Center.

Description

Simulation of shock propagation in the east facility the NASA ames research center east (electric ARC shock tube) facility is used to generate the extreme conditions that occur behind strong shock waves. Flow field emission measurements are made in the post-shock gas to provide data for thermo-chemical models and for validation of radiation codes. The measuring station is about 8 meters (or 80 tube diameters) downstream of the primary diaphragm. As the shock travels along the shock tube, boundary layers form on the tube walls behind the shock. In the frame of reference of the shock, this boundary layer flow is subsonic, and thus can interact with the shock wave, distorting IT and changing its propagation speed. For precise measurements of the post-shock flow, IT is essential to exactly quantify the shock speed and the post-shock environment.
