About this award

This is a Cooperative Agreement awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to the Bay Area Environmental Research Institute (BAER Institute), a non-profit research organization. The contract, valued at $1,277,914.00, supports the Observations of Aerosols above Clouds and their Interactions (ORACLES) experiment, a multi-year effort to study the evolution of African biomass burning aerosol and its interaction with low-level clouds. The contract aims to determine the impact of African biomass burning aerosol on cloud properties and radiation balance, acquire a process-level understanding of aerosol-radiation interactions and resulting cloud adjustments, and improve future measurements by gathering testbed datasets. This contract is not set aside and is part of NASA's broader Earth science research portfolio.

Description

The oracles (observations of aerosols above clouds and their interactions)experiment is a multi-year effort to study the evolution of african biomass burning aerosol and its interaction with low level clouds, with the following overarching goals 1 determine the impact of african BB aerosol on cloud properties and the radiation balance over the south atlantic. 2 acquire a process-level understanding of aerosol radiation interactions and resulting cloud adjustments, as well as aerosol cloud interactions that can be applied globally. 3 improve future measurements by gathering testbed datasets that can be used to verify and refine current and future observation methods and simulation techniques.
