About this award

This is a five-year Cooperative Agreement awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to the Bay Area Environmental Research Institute (BAER Institute), a non-profit research organization, for the Atmospheric Tomography Mission (ATOM) project. ATOM is a science-enabling mission under NASA's Earth Venture Suborbital-2 program, with the goal of investigating the impact of human-produced air pollution on greenhouse gases and chemically reactive gases in the atmosphere. The $1,203,926 contract will fund airborne instruments that analyze atmospheric chemistry transformations caused by air pollutants and their impact on methane and ozone levels. This work supports international policy discussions on mitigating short-lived climate forcers. The contract does not have a set-aside designation, reflecting BAER Institute's specialized scientific research capabilities across various disciplines for federal agencies.

Description

The atmospheric tomography mission (atom) is a five-year mission specifically targeted to investigate the impact of human-produced air pollution on greenhouse gases and on chemically reactive gases in the atmosphere. Atom was competitively selected for funding in response to roses 2013 solicitation NNH13ZDA001N-EVS2 under nasas earth venture suborbital-2 program. Reductions of atmospheric concentrations of methane (CH4), tropospheric ozone (O3) and black carbon (BC) aerosols are effective measures to slow global warming and to improve air quality. Airborne instruments will look at how atmospheric chemistry is transformed by various air pollutants and at the impact on CH4 and O3. Mitigation of these short-lived climate forcers is a major component of current international policy discussions.
