About this award

This is a cooperative agreement awarded by NASA to the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) for the DREAM2 proposal. Under this $1,029,026 award, UC Berkeley's Space Sciences Laboratory will perform tasks related to analyzing and modeling the variable plasma environment around the Moon, near-Earth asteroids, and the Martian moons using data from missions like ARTEMIS, Lunar Prospector, WIND, and GEOTAIL. They will also develop plasma simulation software, collaborate with other DREAM2 teams, and support microgravity dust and granular materials studies. The agreement has no set-aside designation and runs through March 2023. As the parent organization, the California State Controller's Office would administer any resulting task orders for UC Berkeley.

Description

As part of the DREAM2 proposal, personnel at the university of california at berkeley space sciences laboratory (UCB-SSL) will perform the following tasks: analyze and interpret publicly available data from the artemis and lunar prospector LP) missions in order to describe, characterize, and model the variable plasma environment around the moon. Data from wind, geotail, and other missions will be used to characterize the variable plasma environments in CIS-lunar and L1 regions of interplanetary space. Available data from mars express, in the form of publicly released data or published results, will be used to assess the plasma environments present at the martian moons phobos and deimos. Develop software for the simulation of plasma dynamics at the moon, near-earth asteroids (neas), and the martian moons utilizing particle-in-cell (PIC) and codes. Results from these simulations will be compared to available spacecraft data as well as published work from other past and current missions to the moon, neas, and mars. Participate in a summer fellowship program for students at the advanced undergraduate and/or graduate level, as appropriate, focusing on topics concerning the moon, neas, and/or mars, with an emphasis on the science and exploration of these bodies. Collaborate with the leads of other study teams in the areas of exospheres, surface-space interactions, and radiation to understand the dynamic environments present at the moon, neas, and phobos/deimos, including model integration where possible. Collaborate with the lunar reconnaissance orbiter (LRO), lunar atmosphere and dust environment explorer (ladee), mars atmosphere and volatile evolution (maven), mars express, and other missions performing measurements relevant to DREAM2 models and results. Support studies of the electrical properties of dust and granular materials in micro-gravity environments in cooperation with other DREAM2 members. Attend meetings and conferences on topics relevant to DREAM2, including participation in the DREAM2 extreme environment program (deep) studies. Disseminate results of DREAM2 research at conferences and in refereed journals
