About this award
This federal contract award, with ID 80NSSC25M7113, was issued by NASA's Shared Services Center to the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) as the prime contractor. The $184,110.00 cooperative agreement will fund UC Berkeley to use infrared spectrometers on NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF/ISHELL) and the Keck Observatory (KECK/NIRSPEC) to support the Microwave Radiometer (MWR) and Jovian Infrared Auroral Mapper (JIRAM) instruments on the Juno spacecraft. The work will include comparative studies of giant planet meteorology and cloud physics, enhancing the science return of the Juno and Cassini missions, and complementing James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) observations. The contract does not have a set-aside designation and is scheduled for completion by February 25, 2028.
Description
We will use infrared spectrometers on NASA's infrared telescope facility (irtf/ishell) and at the keck observatory (keck/ nirspec). Our simultaneous ground-based observations will directly support the microwave radiometer (MWR) and jovian infrared auroral mapper (jiram) on the juno spacecraft. Saturn observations will trace the evolution of atmospheric properties following major convective storms in 2011 and 2018. The proposed work will allow comparative studies of giant planet meteorology and cloud physics, enhance the science return of the juno and cassini missions, and complement jwst observations obtained in 2022.
