About this award
The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) was awarded a $36.4 million cooperative agreement by a federal civilian agency effective August 1, 2025, with an ultimate completion date of July 31, 2030. Under this agreement, Caltech will operate and expand the Infrared Science Archive (IRSA), a major data repository that will experience exponential growth during the five-year performance period. IRSA will ingest and manage data from multiple transformational space missions including Euclid, SPHEREx, NeoRVeyor, Ultrasat, and Ariel, positioning the archive as a critical resource for advancing research priorities identified in the 2020 Decadal Survey. The award includes no set-aside designation, reflecting Caltech's competitive capabilities in this specialized domain.
Beyond the new mission data, Calsa will continue releasing data from established sources including NEOWISE, the Infrared Telescope Facility, and community-contributed resources, all of which have demonstrated strong records of enabling novel scientific research. Caltech will also continue its successful public access initiative for simulated data required for next-generation cosmology surveys. The work will be performed in Pasadena, California, supporting the agency's mission to provide the astronomical research community with comprehensive infrared data archives and resources essential for advancing observational astrophysics and cosmological science.
Description
During FY25-30, the volume of irsa's holdings will grow by an order of magnitude (SEC.2) as we ingest data from euclid, spherex, neorveyor, ultrasat, and ariel. These new missions will be transformational in all science areas highlighted in the 2020 decadal survey report. Irsa will also continue to release data from neowise, irtf, and the community, resources which have a strong track record of enabling novel research. We will also continue our successful initiative to provide public access to simulated data necessary for the success of the next generation of cosmology surveys.
