About this award
This federal contract award, valued at $99,938.00, was issued by the Shared Services Center of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to the University of Wyoming. The contract is a Cooperative Agreement with a period of performance ending on July 5, 2026.
The contract will utilize NASA's ICESat-2 (IS-2) platform to create bathymetric products and total water volume calculations for thermokarst lakes within the Arctic National Sanctuary (ANS). This represents a novel application of IS-2 data, as it has not been previously used for deriving thermokarst lake bathymetry. The research aims to demonstrate the usefulness of IS-2 data for monitoring bathymetric changes in individual thermokarst lakes, which would be an unprecedented use case for this technology.
The contract does not have a set-aside designation, indicating the University of Wyoming was selected through open competition. As a comprehensive public land-grant research university, the University of Wyoming has extensive experience in conducting scientific research and providing technical services to various federal agencies across multiple disciplines, including environmental monitoring, natural resource management, and advanced technologies.
Description
One of the main novelties of this proposed research lies in the utilization of NASA's is-2 platform to create bathymetric products and subsequent total water volume (not simply volumetric change) for thermokarst lakes within the ANS. To our knowledge, is-2 data has not been utilized for the derivation of thermokarst lake bathymetry and the outputs of this proposed research should prove to be the first of their kind. Lastly, this work will seek to prove the usefulness of is-2 data for thermokarst bathymetric change monitoring at the individual lake scale, which would be an unprecedented use-case for is-2 data.
